SEX IN THE MEDIA

Sex, Sex, Sex that’s all you hear about these days. It is everywhere around you whether it is from ads on a magazine or billboard, commercials, TV shows, and movies. Ask yourself this: how has the mass media affected the ways that teens have looked at sex, how it is portrayed, and how they are influenced by it? There are many teenagers that watch TV shows on the CW network and watch shows such as Gossip Girl, 90210, and One Tree Hill and they all portray some sort of sexual activity. A couple of weeks ago on Gossip Girl they even showed a three-some between three of the main characters. What do you think about that?

According to the Washington Post, authors of a journal called American Academy of Pediatrics have found a connection between watching television shows with sexual content such as flirting, making out, sex scenes, becoming sexually active earlier, and sexually explicit music videos has made an increased risk of sexually transmitted diseases and teen pregnancies.

Sexual intercourse has become more frequent over time on television shows, recently occurring in more than 11% of shows, and that more than 64% of television shows contained at least some sexual content (Eyal, Kunkel 163).

The essay that I am still interested in is the researched essay. I feel that I can still add a lot of information about the subject, and that my work is still not complete. I am very interested in my subject of sex in the media because it is a very big topic that I can talk about for days. There is a lot of information about this and a couple of days ago when I bought a Seventeen magazine I was flipping through it, and what did I see? An article on how sex is portrayed on TV shows and how they are wrong. I think that the researched essay also shows my progress as a writer, because as each draft was finished, I added more and more information that made the writing interesting to my readers. I believe that this writing also showed my progress as a writer because I know that I am a far more better writer if I can relate to the subject in hand, which in this case I can. The specific skills and talents that it shows are how I can source and add information into my essay and how I can add a personal experience into the essay. It also shows how I can research and come out with a pretty good essay that readers can be interested in. I think that the researched essay has most of the criteria from the assignment already included. I think I just need to add more information and examples from the media on how it portrays sex. And i need to add more quotes. I think that the two essays that I will choose to include is the researched essay and the digital self essay. I want to include the digital self essay because I think that it was one of my essays that were better than the others. I think that the researched essay and the digital self essay were my best works of everything we did this semester.

When I first came in class today, I though that my best research topic was about sex in the media. because I believe that it is a more interesing topic, and it is everywhere you go, for exampl think about the clothes you are wearing or if you are wearing a specifictypr of perfume/cologne, how was that object advertized? It was most likely showing some half-naked woman or the cmmercial had some orm of sexual innuendo.

Two of the most useful comments/questions I got on my topics was that there used to be very little sex in advertising and now you see sex being advertised everywhere, and about not wanting your kids to learn about sex through the media. The other was the question of why would young people rather turn towards the media and not their families?

Two things I found intriguing in other people’s writings were how the media glorifies teen pregnancies by having these TV shows such as The Secret Life of The American Teenager and how it doesn’t show the hardships of having a baby that young and how Amy’s parents were so accepting of hte fact that she was having a baby so young, when some parents make their daughters get an abortion and can even kick them out of their house. The other was about how internet piracy is not actually stealing because it is not a tangible object and doesnt have meaning to anybody, but the truth is that music is important to the artists and it is their work, and they worked hard for it, and you are also stealing the money from the record labels and companies also, so in fact it is actually stealing.

Now that I’ve seen all of these different topics and ways of writing about them, I think the best topic for my researched essay is in fact sex in the media because I feel that I have a stronger opinion on it, and that there are more evidence of it today in magazines, TV shows, movies, magazines,and in advertisements. I can add more information on how it has evolved over the years, and how now sex sells.

Blog Post #8- “The Book Stops Here”

“The Book Stops Here,” by Daniel H. Pink, in my opinion was more interesting than “Cultural Renaissance or Cultural Divide” because it was not as boring to me. It made me pay attention more, and I think that the reason is because Pink started off with a story of Einar Kvaran and how he created articles that everybody can use as a source on wikipedia. I know many people who like to play around with wikipedia and edit the pages(because you can do that), and add things onto the page that aren’t true. I know that if I searched up something on the internet, the first thing that would pop up was wikipedia and I would click on it to just read what it had on the page, even though I know that it is not a credible source, and can mislead you.

I think that Pink’s argument is basically that wikipedia and other non-credible sources are changing things, and making people think that encyclopedias are not credible sources anymore. I know that in many of my classes that we are not allowed to us any form of encyclopedias as a source to site or work. Wikipedia is just a website where people can add articles about their self-knowledge about a subject. You never know when the information can be wrong or right, and you can add a page whenever you want, i know that my friends frat in rpi just put a page on wikipedia on how to play a drinking game, beer die. Pink shows this by putting the example of kvaran and how he adds on a page to wikipedia, even though he is only “self-taught.” We should care about the author’s idea because it would be very helpfulif your doing a researc project, to be careful what you use as a citation, because it could be false information or an uncredied source.

I think that the most interesting part of this essay is from Danny Wool and Derek Ramsey’s experiences from using wikipedia because I knew that many of my friends edited wikipedia and put false information on it, and by using personal experiences, Pink makes the piece more interesting to me.

This essay made me not want to believe what i find on wikipedia because it can be false information that you can be using on a paper, and it is not a credible source. It also made me think that you can never fully trust what the internet is putting out there.

Blog Post #7- psychology or education

I chose to write about Psychology or Education: Which major is right for you? by Katie L. George because becoming a psychology major is an idea that i have in my head in majoring in. Katie L. George gave us a lot of information in what we needed in getting a degree in psychology, like how many credits you needed in a subject. Before I read this piece i was looking at all the information that she provided the readers with, like jobs, and most importantly annual salaries. I believe that these are the most important pieces of information that she gave in her writing. I know that many people come to me for advice, and I try my best to give them the best advice in amy ability, and they find my advice very helpful, and i like to help people with problems, and to be an ear for them to vent about something that is going wrong in their lives. Basically, this piece of writing is saying that you need to pick a major that is going to interest you, and that you will enjoy doing it.

Blog Post #6- “Consider The Lobster”

Wallace uses a lot of information in his excerpt “Consider the Lobster.” He uses many historical, scientific, and personal information. For the scientific information he tells us how lobsters are crustaceans, and how they are basically giant sea-insects. For the historical part he states that up until sometime in the late 1800′s, lobsters were a low class food that they only fed to prisoners once or twice a week because it was “like making people eat rats.” He compares the time from back then to now, because Wallace says that now lobster is a delicacy that is now only a step or two down from caviar. He uses his personal experiences by describing how it is to attend the lobster festival in Maine. I think that the informatio that engaged my attention was how back then lobster was the worse thing that a person could eat, but now it is so expensive and a delicacy that mostly only rich people eat. I think that Wallace wanted to affect me as a reader because it gives the historical background of the lobster of how they were in such an abundance and nobody wanted them, not even prisoners, and then they transformed into something rare that everybody wanted to have and to eat. I could use these simal kinds of information in my subculture essay by saying how the subculture transformed from one thing to another. I could most probably find this information online. I want the reader to understand the history of the subculture, so that they can understand the subculture better itself.

Sub-cultures that I belong to can be:

1. People who live on the first floor of Bru

2. People who live in Cold Spring (Small Towns)

3. The College of Saint Rose

4. People who watch Spongebob

5. People who likes Cars

6. People who like Coffee (Starbucks or DD)

7. People who are Exploratory majors

8. People who listen and or watch Disney Channel/Nickelodeon

9. People who have divorced parents

10. People who live with their moms

11. People who love Taco Bell

12. People who like GG or 90210 or OTH, etc.

I think the 2 subcultures that I can mostly fit in is the people who live in Cold Spring (Small Towns) and people who watch spongebob. I live in Cold Spring so I can relate to living there. Everybody knows everything about everyone and we are a very close community. Living in a small community is different than living in a city for many reasons. First off you don’t know everybody, where in a small town you know absolutely everyone, and you know everyone who is related to each other. With people who watch spongebob, me and my friends, even though we are all old, still watch spongebob all the time. We love to have sleepovers and when we wake up on Saturday mornings, we make breakfast and watch spongebob together. My group of friends weren’t the only ones who watched it, but the majority, or even all of the people in my High School watched it. Even some of my teachers watched Spongebob.

From draft one to draft three my essay has changed greatly. In my first draft I had many ideas that made me have two essays in one. In the beginning I didn’t have enough information on avatars and on incarnation, but too much about my about me section in my Facebook profile. In my second draft I added more information, added less information about my Facebook profile, and also added a negative personal experience that happened to me through Facebook. After meeting with Dr. Middleton she gave me the idea to chop off a page and a half of my essay so that I have one central idea, add how I interact with society via pictures and my wall-to-wall on Facebook, and by adding my own personal take on avatars and incarnation. I liked how some writers in the class added their own personal experiences that happened to them, or to a fellow classmate. This created me to have a personal connection with their stories and essays. I already tried to experiment with trying to put my own personal experience with Facebook in my essay, but it just created two separate essays and they did not mesh well. This approacg is a little different than what I have done in the past. In the past we did write drafts, but only two of them and only the teacher read them over and fixed grammical errors and told you what did or did not make sense. Its different in that your peers also get to read and critique your work. I like it better the way that we are writing the papers because it gives me an array of opinions and not only the teachers.

In the reading “When a Risque Online Person Undermines a Chance for A Job”, the author is basically telling the readers that you should always be cautious with what you put on the internet because you never know who will ever see it. When you sign up for Facebook you have to agree to their terms. Nobody ever reads the terms and agreements, but what they dont know is that they are basically signing their life over to Facebook. Facebook now owns everything that you post on their website including pictures. There were stories of people who were not very careful with what they posted, and it made them lose their chances of recieving a job. If you were going to employ somebody and you saw their Facebook profile filled with negativity and bad behaviors, would you want to hire them in order to work for your company? Probably not. You need to be careful of what you post online because it can affect you in many ways.

In “Meet my 5,000 New Best Pals” the author, Janet Kornblum a common idea that she states throughout her reading is that you shouldn’t “friend” people that you do not know. You don’t know the person who you are friending, and that can lead to a potential danger in the future. The author told a story about a person who had no friends and thought that with the more friends that she had, the better she felt. But the truth is that online friends are very apparent.

The beliefs of these authors can be used in my essay in many ways. I can emphasis more on the dangers of not knowing somebody and letting them into your life via Facebook. I can even add more on to the idea of creating a different persona online so that you can be more appealing to other people, or so that people with introverted personalities can become more extroverted. Then I can also include the not so good things about making a different persona to become a predator or a stalker.

Pop Identity/Leading a Double Life

After discussing both of the readings in class today, an interest that I liked the most was the idea of Virtual Life, the story of the apposed lawyer, Wyrick Jr. and how he deceived everyone into believing that he was a legit lawyer. The whole idea behind this event is scary, because anybody can go online and pretend to be somebody that they’re not. Anybody can be misled into thinking that somebody can help you, but the truth is that you should never completely trust anybody on the internet unless you know them personally, or you know somebody who knows them. A theme in this reading is a sense of identity. Do you really know who anybody is truly? You can be deceived in many ways, but the only way to gain knowledge is from experience. The other reading that interested me a lot was the essay dealing with having a completely different life in “cyber space” a.k.a. the internet than who you really are in real life. Some people are probably more comfortable with being themselves online than face-to-face. A person might be shy in person, but on the internet they can be outgoing and talk to people that they might be scared to talk to in person. I think that certain people like this have a lack of confidence and they can show their real emotions online. The bad thing about this is that people have turned to the internet and texting as a form of communication these days, instead of talking to them on the phone or even talking to them in person. Some people are just weird when it comes to leading a double life on the internet though, they can seem cool in person, but on the internet they can make themselves seem like a real creeper. Some of the things that people do on the internet are just weird and people are just crazy these days!
